Postdoctoral Fellowship – Microbial Ecology – 2nd posting

IRDA wishes to recruit a postdoc in molecular microbial ecology to realize projects aimed at better understanding the impact of cropping systems and the management of agricultural practices on the diversity and functions of soil microbial community. The postdoc will join a dynamic and experienced team from the Microbial Ecology Laboratory (LEM). This person will work in a stimulating and educational work environment. The LEM team carries out and collaborates on many projects bringing together several partners from universities, government and private research centers as well as the agronomists and growers. The LEM team has a large collection of soil microbiomes with diverse pedoclimatic characteristics taken from a range of cropping systems. These projects aim to develop decision-support tools useful for agronomists and growers to better benefit from the diversity and functions of soil microbial community to improve agricultural management strategies, climate resilience and business competitiveness.


Under the supervision of the researcher and in collaboration with the research team, the postdoctoral fellow collaborates in the development and implementation of research projects and in the drafting of research grants. He develops and applies approaches in biostatistics, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence (AI) to establish links between data from high throughput sequencing (SHD) techniques and agronomic, physicochemical, meteorological and remote sensing data. The postdoctoral fellow develops analysis and modeling processes to select microbial indicators and determine indices that will be integrated into decision support tools. He contributes closely to the analysis and interpretation of results as well as to the writing of scientific papers, research project reports and proposals for analytical services. Finally, he assists the researcher in establishing fruitful collaborations with research teams and partners from the agri-environmental sector


  • Develops biostatistical and AI analysis processes applied to SHD data of microbial communities;
  • Develops analysis and modeling processes to select microbial indicators and determines indices that will be integrated into decision support tools;
  • Assists the researcher in the development and implementation of research projects and the preparation of funding requests for R&D and transfer projects;
  • Collaborates in the writing and production of research reports, scientific articles, posters, service analysis offers to participate in the presentation and dissemination of results;
  • Proposes and participates in the development of knowledge transfer strategies in collaboration with other IRDA teams to promote the visibility of IRDA’s work;
  • Performs literature reviews as part of grant applications or research projects;
  • Participate in meetings with various employees, partners and customers;
  • Develops good communications with the various project collaborators.


The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Richard Hogue, researcher at IRDA and head of LEM and will collaborate closely with the research teams of projects carried out at LEM, including those of Arnaud Droit, professor and researcher at CRCHUQ and at Institute Intelligence and Data, and Caroline Halde, professor and researcher in agroecology at Laval University.


Postgraduate degree (Ph. D. or equivalent) in microbial ecology, statistics, modeling, bioinformatics, agronomy, or a related discipline.


  • Excellent knowledge of biostatistics and AI and model applications;
  • Very good knowledge of microbial ecology and R and / or Python languages;
  • Good knowledge of Pipelines related to sequence analysis related to microbial diversity (an asset);
  • Demonstrated proficiency in carrying out all phases of a research project: development of the experimental setup, selection of methods, data acquisition, management and interpretation, report writing and publication in peer reviewed journals;
  • Fluency in French and English (written and spoken);
  • Ability to work dynamically with inter-institutional teams including researchers, postdocs, research professionals, graduate students, and partners from the agri-environmental sector;
  • Ability to obtain postdoctoral fellowships (an asset);
  • Knowledge of remote sensing and geomatics techniques and software (an asset);
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • The amount of the postdoctoral fellowship is competitive with those offered by Canadian granting agencies (e.g.: NSERC);
  • Duration: two (2) years (an annual amount, renewable for a second year);
  • Starting date: as soon as possible;
  • Work period: based on 35 hours per week requiring a certain flexibility;
  • Possibility of travel and stay abroad (transport costs, meals and accommodation reimbursed).


The workplace is IRDA at Complexe scientifique de Québec located at 2700, rue Einstein, Quebec (QC) Canada G1P 3W8.

The postdoctoral fellow will be working from home as soon as he takes up his duties and for the duration required according to the evolution of the health and safety instructions in force during the COVID-19 pandemic. Only special conditions will require a presence in the workplace at the Scientific Complex of Quebec.
